In the heart of the Casentino forest hides an enchanted place, with ancient and fascinating history. Camaldoli is a community of benedictine monks that is divided between the Sacred Hermitage and the Monastery, the former being a place of solitude and spiritual retreat, the latter being a place of sharing and communion. Life is slow, but the monks are not sitting on their hands! The Ancient Pharmacy of the Camaldolese Monks is, in fact, full of treasures: cosmetics and liquors, wines and jams, herbal teas and chocolate, and lots and lots of candies.

The Ancient Pharmacy of the Camaldolese Monks is a one of a kind historical institution. The Camaldoli Hermitage was founded between 1024 and 1025 by San Romualdo and, since then, the Camaldolese monks have catalogued and studied the flora and fauna of the territory. They have become connoisseurs of the healing properties of aromatic herbs, which they have used for elixirs, cosmetics and, our favorites, a wide range of balsamic candies.
